The profound effects of the bisphosphonates on calcium metabolism were discovered over 30 years ago, and they are now well established as the major drugs used for the treatment of bone diseases associated with excessive resorption. Their principal uses are for Paget disease of bone, myeloma, bone metastases, and osteoporosis in adults, but there has been increasing and successful application. Using analyses of iliac crest cell and tissue, back-scattered electron imaging, and biochemical techniques, we characterized the effects of a day spaceflight (Bion 11) on bone structure and bone formation in two 3- to 4-yr-old male rhesus monkeys compared with . Recent findings indicate that soy isoflavones and their metabolites may play a role in mitigating postmenopausal bone loss. Equol, a metabolite of the soy isoflavone daidzein produced by intestinal bacteria, has shown some potential, but only 30–50% of the U.S. population is capable of converting dietary daidzein to equol. There are limited data on the pharmacokinetics of dietary racemic. The nutritional benefits of pomegranate have attracted great scientific interest. The pomegranate, including the pomegranate peel, has been used worldwide for many years as a fruit with medicinal activity, mostly antioxidant properties. Among chronic diseases, osteoporosis, which is associated with bone remodelling impairment leading to progressive bone loss, could eventually benefit from.

Over 99 percent of total body calcium is found in teeth and bones. The remainder is present in blood, extracellular fluid. Two distinct projects involving the use of lanthanide metal ions are discussed in this thesis. In the first study, the magnetic interactions in heterometallic d/f complexes were investigated. The most powerful permanent magnet known to date consists of a Nd-Fe core; however, the magnetic exchange between these two metal ions is poorly understood. By purposeful design, new cationic d/f.   Disease Prevention Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder in which bone mass and strength are compromised, resulting in an increased risk of ning a hip fracture is one of the most serious consequences of osteoporosis. Nearly one-third of those who sustain osteoporotic hip fractures enter nursing homes within a year following the fracture, and one person in four dies.

As part of an experiment to study the role of corticosteroids in bone changes during spaceflight, male Sprague-Dawley rats (6 wk old, g body weight) were placed in orbit for 17 days, in groups. The stability of the lymphoblastoid cell line producing an anti-sclerostin antibody may be improved by fusing the transformed cell line with a murine myeloma to produce a mouse-human hybrid cell line according to methods known in the art (see, e.g., Glasky et al., Hybridoma ()). Still another method to generate human monoclonal. Because the morphometric analysis is extremely time-consuming, the number of variables evaluated depends on whether the biopsy specimen is being analyzed for diagnostic or research purposes. Listed next are eight indices of trabecular bone that are of particular clinical Cited by: 4.

Lawrence P. Garetto's 35 research works with 1, citations and 2, reads, including: Decreased alveolar bone turnover is related to the occurrence of root resorption during experimental tooth. However, the histomorphometric indices that describe the mechanisms of bone loss are important in the understanding of the usefulness and limitations of the histomorphometric method.

Using osteoporosis as an example, this chapter presents the methodological aspects of. Histomorphometry is the method used to quantify histological features of bone (quantitative bone histology) 8,10,15,30–32, in particular static and dynamic parameters of bone structure, formation and main use is in clinical studies in which reproducibility is requi especially for the evaluation of the effects of a given treatment on resorptive and formative bone cells   Histomorphometric Analysis.

Histomorphometric analysis of bone can range from simple assessments of bone structure to more detailed analyses of cell numbers and function.

An essential reference for anyone interested in histomorphometry is the publication by A. Michael Parfitt and colleagues. Bone is a dynamic tissue that undergoes constant remodeling, balancing bone resorption by osteoclasts with bone formation by osteoblasts (Baron, ; Karsenty and Wagner, ).An altered balance between bone formation and bone resorption causes diseases such as osteoporosis and osteopetrosis (Seeman, ; Villa et al., ).It is well known that osteoclasts are responsible for.

Cell Metabolism Cell Homeostasis and Stress Response 16 The analysis of differential gene expression and analysis of global patterns of gene expression using macro and microarray approaches have identified a broad spectrum of transcripts whose expression is modified in response to dehydration (Fowler & Thomashow, ; Kreps et al., ; Seki.

It is a coupled sequence of catabolic (resorptive) and anabolic (osteogenic) events to support calcium homeostasis and repair (renew) aged or damaged mineralized tissue.

Histological studies indicate that both bones and teeth remodel. To perform kinetic analyses of bone formation and mineralization, calcein was injected twice at a 3-d interval in 3-wk-old mice and a 7-d interval in 6-wk-old mice.

Calcein injections formed two consecutive labels in most parts of 3- and 6-wk-old wild-type bone (Fig. 7 A). Author(s): Roberts,W Eugene; Garetto,Lawrence P; IUPUI (Campus) Investigator(s): Roberts,W Eugene; Non-NASA Center: IN U, Indianapolis.

Nanobiomaterials in Hard Tissue Engineering covers the latest developments in the field of hard tissue engineering at the g researchers from around the world discuss the latest research and offer new insights.

This book presents data about the fabrication and characterization of nanobiomaterials involved in hard tissue reconstruction, describing recent progress and the. The study was prompted by the rapid recovery of bone mass following severe osteopenia (decreased bone mass) caused by inducible osteoblast ablation, which suggested precise control of bone mass.

The histomorphometric analysis was done on a Leica quantimet image processor and the followings measures were performed: trabecular bone volume (BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb Th) and number (Tb N), Interconnectivity Index (ICI), Star Volume of the bone marrow, Characterization of the trabecular network (node and free-end count).

Histomorphometric analysis. At yr, a left iliac crest biopsy was performed as described in the Patients and Methods. The static histomorphometric data are listed in Table 1 Most striking is thinner than normal cortical bone, similar to osteoporotic females, and attenuated trabecular thickness, despite normal trabecular number and spacing.

In our previous investigation, delphinidin, one of the most abundant anthocyanins found in vegetables and berry fruits, had been shown to inhibit osteoclasts and prevent bone loss in mouse models of osteoporosis. In the present study, we investigated whether a delphinidin glycoside-enriched maqui berry extract (MBE, Delphinol®) exhibits beneficial effects on bone metabolism both in vitro and.

The histomorphometric analysis indicated that both the amount of bone formed during 30 days and the mineral apposition rate during 10 days (deduced from the interval between the two tetracycline labels) were significantly greater (p.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of. A meta-analysis included six RCTs ( participants) of vitamin D 3 supplementation for 1–2 years' duration in children aged 8–17 years, The meta-analysis found supplementation had no effect on total-body BMC or BMD of the hip or forearm, although there was a trend to a small effect on lumbar spine density and towards a larger.

Histomorphometric analysis revealed a minimal effect on bone-formation parameters with the administration of low-dose anti-resorptives in Trial V.

For most treatment groups, no significant change in BFR, AMPm, or MAR was observed (P > ). Bone turnover comprises two processes: the removal of old bone (resorption) and the laying down of new bone (formation).

N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PINP) and C-telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I) are markers of bone formation and resorption, respectively, that are recommended for clinical use. Bone turnover markers can be measured on several occasions in one individual.
